If your HVAC system is properly maintained, it will keep running for upwards of 15-25 years. However, if not properly maintained, or if exposed to damaging conditions, your HVAC system can start to have issues. Some of these problems can be harmless but inconvenient, such as the AC shutting on and off or blowing hot air. However, there are some dangerous HVAC issues that need to be identified and addressed immediately for safety purposes. Below are 4 telltale signs of potentially dangerous HVAC issues for you to learn to recognize.
Burning smell
A burning smell is only normal within the first 24 hours of being started up, which comes from the layer of lubricant oil applied for smooth running. However, after the first day of operation, there should never be any kind of burning smell coming from your furnace or HVAC system. The most likely problem is that the wiring insulation has been burned. Without insulation, charred wires are at a high risk of causing a fire. Make sure to turn off the unit until an HVAC contractor can diagnose the problem.
Leaks
If you notice leaking from your air conditioner, it’s time to call an HVAC company. This leaking can be a few different things. First, and less dangerously, the leak could be a buildup of condensation, as discussed above. However, the leak could also be something more dangerous, like refrigerant, which is a toxic substance. Of course, no matter what is leaking from your air conditioner, you need to address the leak.
Musty smell/mold
HVAC systems accumulate condensation, which can lead to excessive moisture buildups that create mold. Mold is highly dangerous to one’s health and can cause allergic symptoms. These symptoms can escalate as time goes on, and worse kinds of mold can cause worse allergic reactions. One telltale sign of mold in the HVAC system is a musty smell in the home. Should you notice this musty smell, contact an HVAC contractor. An HVAC tech can easily fix the issue by thoroughly cleaning the air ducts of the system.
Crackling or sizzling sound
In addition to a burning smell, a crackling or sizzling sound coming from your air conditioner indicates that there are electrical problems. However, in the case of a crackling sound, the situation could be dire. Crackling/sizzling could indicate arcing, which can create sparks that start a fire. As is the case for any of these warning signs, be sure to contact an HVAC tech to check out the problem.
